When the news broke that Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be wearing the No.9 shirt at Manchester United and Anthony Martial would be changed to No.11, there were rumours everywhere.
The general insinuation was that Martial was furious with Man United for two reasons; the first being that his shirt had been taken away from him and the second insisting he wasn’t informed about the decision until it happened. Those rumours manifested themselves into reports he could consider leaving the club and panic set in.
Of course, that panic was misguided and the rumours far removed from the truth which makes this picture from today’s 5-2 win over Galatasaray that bit better given the context around it:
I said it at the time but the thought of Martial wanting to leave Man United because he had his shirt number changed might have been my favourite ever transfer rumour. Imagine believing that was true.
Martial is at United for the long run and is a key player in what is shaping up to be one of our best squads since the 2007/8 double winning side under Sir Alex Ferguson. Last year was when Martial announced himself on the scene, this season is where he can cement his place in Europe’s elite as one of the most dangerous attackers in the game.
