Daivd Moyes: Manchester United wanted Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Toni Kroos

David Moyes has revealed that Manchester United tried to sign Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Toni Kroos when he took over in 2013.

Moyes was appointed as manager at Old Trafford following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, but only lasted 10 months before he was fired for guiding the side to a seventh place finish in the Premier League.

He made just one major signing during his time at the club in Belgium midfielder Marouane Fellaini arriving from Everton for £27.5m.

Speaking about the situation, Moyes revealed that he tried to sign some of the world’s very best players.

“Toni Kroos was agreed to come in the summer,” he said. “I had agreed it with Toni himself and his agent.

“When I first went in my real target was Bale.

“I felt all along that Bale was a Manchester United player. I fought right until the last minute. We actually offered a bigger deal than Real Madrid.

“But Gareth had his mind made up on going to Real Madrid. That was, in my mind, the player I really wanted to bring to Manchester United.”

“I remember when I first met Sir Alex and he always said there was a chance Ronaldo might come back.

“So that was the level we were targeting.”

Moyes was criticised for his inability to to attract top-level stars to Old Trafford, but he claims that Kroos had even agreed to come in the summer.

The fact of the matter is that none of the players ended up joining him unlike Jose Mourinho, who signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitarayn, Paul Pogba and Eric Bailly in his first transfer window without Champions League football to offer.
