Southampton captain Jose Fonte has handed in a transfer request, the club has confirmed.
Fonte, 33, was strongly linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer after winning Euro 2016 with Portugal but remained at the South coast club after intense speculation linking him with a move to Old Trafford.
Now, Fonte will once again be linked and with Man United reportedly in the market for a new centre-back there is logic behind the speculation.

Speaking about Fonte, Southampton’s director of football Les Reed said: “He’s had several opportunities to improve the contract situation. He’s reserved his right not to do that.
“He’s made it very clear he would like to explore the opportunities for a transfer.
“That’s where we are at the moment, Jose wants to leave the club. He’s formally asked for a transfer.”
There is every chance Fonte will follow in the footsteps of his former teammate Graziano Pelle and make a move to China in order to get a bumper wage packet to end his career but it all depends on what his priorities are at this stage and of course whether clubs come in for him.
Fonte has played his card by handing in a transfer request and having been a target for United this year already, it will be interesting to see if Mourinho jumps to bring in his first Portuguese signing to bolster his defensive options this year.
