Paul Pogba has been getting better with each passing performance for Manchester United this season and he’s quickly becoming one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
Pogba’s growing influence is starting to show and his form is a crucial reason why Man United are on an eight-game winning streak heading into the EFL Cup semi-final against Hull City on Tuesday night.
Ever since Paul Scholes retired we had a gaping hole in our midfield which others failed to fill but Pogba is the real deal and his mentality is definitely rubbing off onto those around him.
Speaking to Man United about the desire to reach the EFL Cup final, Pogba said: “I am a winner and when I play I want to win. Every league game, every cup game, I want to win otherwise there is no point in playing football! I want to win my first trophy with United and if we have a chance in the cup we have to take it.”
Having been rested for the FA Cup win over Reading, Pogba is raring to go tonight against Hull. He added: “Yes it’s always good for a player to rest for one game. I was on the bench ready to come on if I was needed; you always have to be ready. I’ve been playing a lot recently so it’s good for me physically and we’ll see how the next games go.”
Watching Pogba play is a privilege. He’s got seven goals and four assists to his name so far this year and is now only two goals shy of his total from Juventus last season, so the early detractors pointing towards a lack of goals are now quickly wolfing down their humble pie. He’s top drawer and I can’t wait to see him continue to grow.
Pogba should never have left United and it was certainly one of Sir Alex’s biggest mistakes to let him go but he’s home now and that’s all that matters. Heading into the EFL Cup semi-final, there is only one thing on his mind.
“It’s a game we want to win of course,” Pogba said.
“It’s a semi-final, we want to be in the final and we want to win that cup. If we have the chance to win any trophy we want to take it. It’s an important game for us and the second leg will be difficult so let’s try to finish the tie in the first leg.
“It’s a cup semi-final and they’re playing against Man United so they have nothing to lose. They’ll want to take anything that they can as they’re not doing as well as they’d like at this moment. They’ve had a change of manager too and will want to win this game as it’s very important for them.
“We’ve been playing very well, but we know how football can go. You can go out there and things can turn straightaway. We need to be focused and if we keep playing the football we are playing at the moment then we will be okay.”
Jose Mourinho is building something special at United at the moment, you can feel it. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly have all been superb signings who have made an immediate impact on the team. When Jose has a summer clear out this year, the squad will look even better and it’s going to set us up perfectly for next season.
Pogba is a joy to watch and United finally have that midfield general we’ve been missing for some time now. He’ll no doubt return to our starting XI against Hull and if his recent form is anything to go by, he’ll be on fire at Old Trafford under the floodlights once again.
