Manchester United could sign Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko for a fee of £38m over the summer, according to reports from France.
The Frenchman has made 28 appearances for the Ligue 1 leaders this season, impressing many with his regimented, steely attitude.
And according to L’Equipe, Mourinho could secure Bakayoko’s services for a fee ranging between €40m to €45m after the 22-year-old, whose contract expires in 2019, refused to sign an extension.
Monaco’s rapid ascension to the top of Ligue 1 has surprised everyone this season. The French side have, for a number of years now, been something of an ambiguous, unavoidably promising but ultimately lukewarm outfit for the last few years, lacking any real definition or purpose.
But Bakayoko’s influence at the base of midfield this season has been nothing short of ground-breaking. The 22-year-old has added a valuable level of steel and balance to Monaco’s set-up, demolishing opponents with his direct, ruthless style, and Mourinho will know that, once Carrick decides to hang up his boots, the youngster may well just be a perfect fit alongside Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba.
