Jose Mourinho: I see Zlatan Ibrahimovic staying with Manchester United

Jose Mourinho is planning for next season with Zlatan Ibrahimovic as an integral part of his Manchester United squad.

The Swedish striker has been phenomenal since joining from Paris St. Germain in the summer on a free transfer and already has 26 goals to his name in all competitions but having only signed on a one-year deal, there were question marks over whether he’d remain at the club next year.

Both Mourinho and Ibrahimovic have previously spoke positively about the idea of Zlatan, 35, staying for another year and Jose offered further insight into the potential deal in his Bournemouth press conference.

When asked about Ibrahimovic’s future, Mourinho said: “I see him staying with us because he was the initial agreement to come to us for one year plus us to have the option so I see him staying with us.

“It’s been an amazing successful year for him, doesn’t matter what is going to happen until end of the season but the number of goals he’s scored, the trophy he won, the impact he had, the two times he played in the cathedral is more than enough to consider him a success at Manchester United.

“But this team has a lot to grow up, the next transfer window will bring the team to a different level because we are going to try and bring a few players, so I think Zlatan will be fundamental in the second year of this team and I think he’s willing to stay.”

I think you’d struggle to find a Man United fan who wouldn’t want to see Ibrahimovic staying for one more season. Thirty goal a season strikers are so hard to come by in modern football that United would be foolish to let him leave without trying their utmost to keep him here.

Ibrahimovic has been a revelation on the pitch both with his goals and the influence he’s had in restoring a winning mentality into a squad which has lacked it so much. To lose that next year in Jose Mourinho’s second season would be so difficult to replace and in a window where we’ve got to bring in a few new players, I don’t know why Mourinho would make it harder than it needs to be.

Sir Alex Ferguson would have absolutely loved Ibrahimovic in his United squad and I can’t see Mourinho letting him go either, why would he?
