It was initially thought by many that Jose Mourinho’s arrival in the summer would see Mata descend into obscurity at Old Trafford, but the Spaniard has enjoyed a superb campaign, claiming ten goals in 38 appearances.
His season was recently cut short, however, after it was revealed he would miss the rest of the 2017/18 campaign following a groin operation.
According to Italian media outlet Calcio Mercato, Inter are keeping a close eye on the 28-year-old’s situation ahead of the summer.
Nobody could have predicted the way in which Mata, an incongruous figure during his time under Mourinho at Chelsea, would enmesh himself in the Portuguese’s set-up at Man United this season.
He deserves praise for finding a way to use his craftiness on the ball and superb awareness to significant effect this season; most of his goals have been built on his subtle yet deadly movement in and around the box. Losing him at this stage of the season could be costly.
Mourinho has always placed his faith in players capable of delivering strong performances on a regular basis, and Mata has managed to fit into that mould over the last few months. Losing him permanently, therefore, would be calamitous for the Portuguese.
