Jose Mourinho: Manchester United will prioritise the Europa League

Jose Mourinho has made it clear that Manchester United will place more emphasis on winning the Europa League this season.

Man United claimed a place in the semi-final against Celta Vigo earlier this week following a 2-1 win over Anderlecht at Old Trafford.

Their 2-0 win against Burnley on Sunday leaves them just one point behind fourth placed Manchester City – their next Premier League opponents.

But Mourinho, speaking after the game, was adamant that he would prioritise winning the Europa League after reaching the semi-finals.

Mourinho’s thinking here makes sense. United are just three games away from Champions League football in Europe this season. All they need to do is, like expected, hold their own against the Spanish side and then beat either Ajax or Lyon in Stockholm.

This is a far less rocky route compared to the one leading to the fourth place trophy: six brutal games, hallmarked by visits to Man City, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, provide plenty of room for slip ups. Even the upcoming trip to Southampton and clash with Crystal Palace on the final day represents potential stumbling blocks.

Prioritising the Europa League, therefore, feels right not just because of its practicality but also since it aligns with what United supporters crave: winning trophies.
