Pep Guardiola confirms Sergio Aguero and David Silva concerns for Manchester derby

Pep Guardiola has confirmed both Sergio Aguero and David Silva are injury concerns ahead of the Manchester derby this Thursday.

Silva had to be withdrawn after just 23 minutes into Manchester City’s FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal on Sunday and Aguero was taken off in extra-time, leading to question marks over whether either player will be fit to face Man United this week.

Speaking after the game, Guardiola relayed those concerns and said more tests would take place on Monday to see what condition the players were in.

He said: “We have three or four days to recover [before the game with United]. Today we are sad but as soon as possible we will stand up,” the City boss said after the defeat to Arsenal.

“We tried to change many things. Results show who you are. They could be better, could be worse.”

When further questioned about Aguero and Silva directly, Gauardiola added: “I don’t know. Aguero was dead from the kick. I didn’t speak with the doctors. We will see tomorrow [Monday] how they are.

“Silva told me he couldn’t keep playing. It would have been better to have him on the pitch, but we will never know that.”

City were without Aguero for the derby they won at Old Trafford earlier this year but United right now are a different beast having not lost in 23 league matches. For city to be without two of their most influential attackers would certainly be a welcome boost to a United side depleted through injury.

United have real momentum in the top four race after an excellent weekend of results. Arsenal and city both didn’t play and Liverpool lost to Crystal Palace, so we’ve gained points on everybody above us and the wind is in our sails. So, it’s advantage United in that respect when we head to face city on Thursday.

If they can then be without two of their key players, it is another reason to be more confident than usual heading to the Etihad.
