The Spaniard was on the cusp of a move to the Bernabeu back in 2015, only for the deal to break down after Madrid failed to submit all the relevant paperwork on time.
He went on to sign a new contract and receive another ‘Player of the Season’ award but has received renewed interest from Zinedine Zindane – clearly impressed with Keylor Navas, who has endured a forgettable campaign – over the last few months.
And according to Marca, the 26-year-old has already asked the club to give him the green light ahead of a move to Spain this summer.
It should be noted that Marca are kind of like Spain’s version of the Daily Mail when it comes to football: unavoidably popular but driven by agendas and, more often than not, stories that fail to materialise, so take anything you read from them with a pinch of salt.
But one can understand why De Gea would want a move to Madrid: Navas has dramatically fallen out of favour under Zidane and the prospect of battling amongst Europe’s elite – something Man United (or any English club, for that matter) won’t be able to do next year, even if they do qualify for the Champions League – could be too salivating to turn down over the summer.
