Manchester United identify Alexandre Lacazette as Alvaro Morata back-up option – report

Manchester United have identified Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette as a back-up option if the deal for Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata falls through, according to reports.

Jose Mourinho is close to securing the Spaniard’s signature after his agent, Juanma Lopez, visited club officials at the Bernabeu last Wednesday to secure a deal set to be worth £79m.

Lacazette has emerged on the radar of several Premier League sides after his proposed move to Atletico Madrid fell through following a re-imposition of their transfer ban, which rules they can’t sign players until next January.

And according to Get French Football News, Man United have sustained regular contact with Alexandre Lacazette’s representatives in case the deal for Morata fails to materialise.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has made it clear that selling Lacazette to United – or any Premier League side, for that matter – is not high on his to-do list. The outflow of talent from France to bigger sides abroad happens on an all too regular basis and creates a continental economic imbalance whereby foreign rivals are strengthened and Ligue 1 becomes a selling league. Keeping the circulation domestic would aid reinvestment into domestic leagues and various programmes.

Either way, with Morata desperate to leave the Bernabeu for more game time, his move to Old Trafford feels less like a matter of ‘if’ and more a case of ‘when’.
