Manchester United are set to sign Nemanja Matic for £40m from Chelsea and will pay him £155,000 a week after agreeing personal terms, according to The Guardian.
Jamie Jackson’s report follows on from Samuel Luckhurst at the Manchester Evening News and Mark Ogden from ESPN who are both saying a deal is set to be completed this week. The wages are reported to be £155,000 a week which would make him the second major signing Jose Mourinho has made after Victor Lindelof joined from SL Benfica.
Fans are really split over whether Matic would be a good signing because AS Monaco midfielder Fabinho is a specialist defensive midfielder and certainly more suited to that role than Matic who is more of an all-round midfielder. There’s actually been some real uproar over paying £40m for a player Chelsea want to sell, especially considering the replacement Tiemoue Bakayoko will actually cost them less than that.
There is of course a chance United could try and sign both Fabinho and Matic but that would be a serious outlay in central midfield given we need a striker and probably a winger as well.
We’ll continue following the Matic story but there is now too much noise for there not to be something going on in the background and by the end of the week Mourinho may well have signed Matic for the second time in his career.
