Newly appointed manager Ernesto Valderde will look towards the Italian, who has expressed a desire to leave the Parc de Princes, as his primary midfield target this summer.
He has also demonstrated signs of being interested in Herrera following a sensational season at Manchester United that saw him claim the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award.
And according to the front pages in Spain, the former Athletic Bilbao boss will look towards Herrera as a ‘Plan B’ if he cannot secure Verratti’s services.
This is not the first time we have seen Valverde express a preference towards the Spaniard: Herrera was, more or less, his first target upon officially taking up the Barcelona job last month and it was made clear, in response, that the midfielder was going absolutely nowhere.
Herrera bleeds red. The 27-year-old may have been born in the Basque region, a place proud of its own culture, but he is a Man United fan at heart and one of the few players that the club would not even consider selling at any price.
