Jose Mourinho has encouraged the Manchester United board to sanction a £60m bid for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier, according to reports.
Man United had focused their efforts on striking a deal with Chelsea for Nemanja Matic and were reportedly in line to sign the 28-year-old for £40m.
But they have been forced to look elsewhere after Chelsea ruled out the prospect of further emboldening Mourinho’s side in the wake of seeing Romelu Lukaku, their number one target, move to Old Trafford.
And the 54-year-old, in turn, has encouraged the board to dedicate their efforts towards signing Dier, one of the players on his ‘list’, by launching a £60m bid.
United did approach Spurs earlier this summer over Dier but quickly baulked at the club’s £50m valuation of the Englishman, convinced they could find a better and cheaper deal elsewhere.
But with Fabinho destined for Atletico Madrid and the Matic deal seemingly off the table, circumstances have changed and the board will have to suspend their frugality in order to supplement a position that Mourinho – determined to find a disciplined, hardened defensive midfielder to give Paul Pogba the freedom to roam forward – will want to see reinforced sooner rather than later.
