West Bromwich Albion set to launch double bid for Chris Smalling and Phil Jones – report

West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Pulis will launch a double bid for ostracised Manchester United duo Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, according to reports.

Smalling, following a lukewarm campaign under Jose Mourinho, will be allowed to leave this summer and even hired a new agent to smoothen the process.

Jones, however, remains part of the Portuguese plans, according to reports, and will be used as cover for Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof during the early stages of the season.

And according to Mirror‘s James Nursey, Pulis will attempt to land the pair with Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley nearing the end of their time at the Hawthorns.

West Brom has proven to serve as a productive place for Man United players no longer capable of sustaining a place in the starting XI at Old Trafford. Darren Fletcher and Jonny Evans, for example, have enjoyed a number of successful seasons under Pulis’ tutelage, and the duo may feel inclined to follow in their footsteps as their United careers start to dwindle.

Smalling may have no choice: he has a number of options to consider and West Brom would be an ideal place to restore a sense of regimentation lost over the 2016/17 campaign.

Jones, however, will face a choice of whether to fight for a place under Mourinho or land a guaranteed spot elsewhere.
