One silver lining to Manchester United’s stuttering end to their Premier League campaign last season was that a number of youngsters received a sniff of life in the first team.
Axel Tuanzebe and Scott McTominay, for example, made their debuts at the Emirates in early May, with the former enjoying a full 90 minutes at right back in which he dealt comfortably with Alexis Sanchez.
Saturday’s clash with LA Galaxy, the first of eight pre-season tour games for Man United, serves as a perfect time to give the youngsters further experience playing alongside some of Jose Mourinho’s first choice options.
The first pre-season game of the summer usually sees two more or less completely different line-ups in each half, such is the manager’s determination to keep every player at a similar level of fitness as he moves forward.
Tuanzebe, more than any other youngster, was wonderfully composed and cool on the pitch, indefatigably going about his work without any fuss. He partnered McTominay and Paul Pogba against Crystal Palace and deserves a chance to further demonstrate to Mourinho that he could indeed be a realistic option next year.
