Jose Mourinho refuses to comment on Nemanja Matic interest from Manchester United

Jose Mourinho refused to be drawn on speculation that he is interested in signing his former midfielder Nemanja Matic from Chelsea.

The Manchester United boss re-signed Matic from Benfica back in 2014 and he went on to become one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League. Now, reports suggest he wants to sign Matic once again but this time bring him to Old Trafford.

Man United certainly need to sign a holding midfielder but when questioned directly about Matic out in Los Angeles, Mourinho didn’t want to discuss any move for Matic directly.

He said: “I can’t say any word about a player who is a Chelsea player, I can’t, it’s difficult, it was a little bit of the same with Morata, we have to respect the player, the club, the owner, the manager, I don’t want to be disrespectful, and be speaking about the player.”

Matic has been given permission not to travel on Chelsea’s pre-season tour and Tiemoue Bakayoko’s expected arrival at Chelsea is widely considered the tipping point in any move for Matic. When he arrives, the Serbian midfielder will then be allowed to leave.

Both Juventus and United are linked with Matic so there is more than one club interested in him but United signing Romelu Lukaku from under Chelsea’s nose raises a question of whether Antonio Conte will even deal with United and strengthen a title rival. It’s a delicate situation.

Matic certainly looks available this summer after Conte’s decision to replace him with Bakayoko but at this stage Mourinho is remaining coy on any interest from United and we’ll have a battle on our hands to sign him from Chelsea. However, if the player wants the move to join Mourinho once again then it might make that task just a little bit easier.
