Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Juan Mata will be out of action for a week after the Spaniard picked up an ankle injury during Manchester United’s 2-1 pre-season win over Real Salt Lake City.
Mata was brought on for the second half and produced some clever touches from the right hand side before going over on his ankle with 60 minutes on the clock.
He was able to get back on his feet but the Portuguese took no chances and swiftly threw on Demetri Mitchell in his place to finish the game.
And Mourinho has confirmed that Mata will miss Thursday’s clash with Manchester City in Houston alongside the friendly with Real Madrid on the 23rd.
Referee asked Jose Mourinho to take @anto_v25 off. He refused. Didn't agree with red card. Mata has ankle injury. JM reckons a week.

The most important aspect of pre-season, in the eyes of any player, will always be fitness. And yes, I know, that’s not exactly interesting, but we must keep it in mind when watching these games.
Mourinho specifically picked Salt Lake City for the purpose of stretching his squad on a physical level: 35 degrees at kick off and at an altitude of 4,500 feet, this was far from a cakewalk in the glamorous Los Angeles sun, and seeing Mata only manage 15 minutes before being forced off serves as a disappointing blow as the Portuguese seeks to optimise his side’s fitness ahead over the next couple of weeks.
