Romelu Lukaku has sent Manchester United supporters a message of gratitude after scoring against Manchester City in Houston on Thursday.
The Belgian, handed another chance to start after scoring against Real Salt Lake, expertly nodded the ball past Ederson before lashing home from an acute angle to put Jose Mourinho’s men ahead after 37 minutes.
He continued to harass Man City’s back four all evening with an array of smart touches and a thunderous shot that struck the bar, evincing high praise from Mourinho at full-time.
And Lukaku has taken to social media to express his gratitude to supporters following what turned out to be a comfortable 2-0 win.
The 24-year-old’s goal was so expertly taken that it deserves closer analysis: an inviting ball from Paul Pogba, a rush of blood to the head from Ederson, who charged off his line, and then a perfectly weighted nod to take the ball wide, seemingly too wide, before that enormous pendulum that is Lukaku’s left foot swings across and lashes the ball home, leaving both Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi eating dust.
It was, in many ways, a microcosm of what the Belgian can offer: instinct, blistering speed, verve, and a mixture of superhuman strength and deadeye finishing. The strength needed in your legs to pull off a finish at that pace and from that angle cannot be underestimated, and supporters will hope it is just the start.
