Manchester United have confirmed defender Guillermo Varela has re-joined former club Penarol this summer.
He arrived at Old Trafford from Penarol in 2013 on a five-year contract during David Moyes’ time at the club, however, has been allowed to return after a disappointing time in Manchester.
It’s a shame because he looked like a player with bags of potential but has just made the wrong decisions on the way, which have held him back and ultimately cost him his career in England.
United’s Twitter account read: “[email protected]_Varela4 has left #MUFC to rejoin Penarol. All the best for the future, Guillermo!”

He hasn’t been able to make a mark at Old Trafford during his time at the club, making four appearances under Louis van Gaal following his loan spell at Real Madrid Castilla in 2014-15.
Jose Mourinho then allowed him to join Eintracht Frankfurt last season, but he got a tattoo against the club’s wishes prior to the DFB Pokal final.
After being sent home early, it’s clear he wasn’t a part of Mourinho’s plans as the Portuguese boss allowed him to join former club Penarol.
