Nemanja Matic looks ahead to Manchester United’s clash with Swansea City

Nemanja Matic has encouraged his teammates to remain focused ahead of Manchester United’s clash with Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium.

The Serbian made a scintillating start to his Premier League season in a Man United shirt, producing an emphatic midfield display as Jose Mourinho’s men cruised to a 4-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday.

But Mourinho, speaking ahead of the clash with Paul Clement’s men, has noted that one positive result does not make United favourites for the title.

And Matic has likewise made it clear that United cannot get carried away and instead continue moving in the right direction against Swansea.

“We know this is just the beginning,” he said. “The season is long and we have a difficult game on Saturday. We have to focus on that.

“It’s always hard to win at that stadium, they are a good team and we watched some videos of them. They have good players and also a good coach. I expect a hard game for us but we are Manchester and we know what we have to do.

“Tammy [Abraham] is a big talent. I remember him from Chelsea. If he continues to work like this and grow up like this, he can be a great striker. He’s already a good striker but he can still improve. He is always dangerous as he’s very quick with his long legs. I think he will be a great striker in the future.”

United put on the performance of the opening weekend and they will be centre of attention on Saturday. The visit to Wales will reveal much more about the true nature of Mourinho’s side. For all of the attacking bravado on show against West Ham, they were poor, lacking conviction in the final third and clearly not up to full speed.

And Swansea, whilst hardly exciting, are a hardworking unit under Clement and they will look to put pressure on United’s back four. We saw what Mourinho’s men could do going forward on Sunday, but supporters will want to see whether their side can demonstrate the necessary grittiness and composure to compete for honours this season.
