Jose Mourinho has confirmed Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling will start for Manchester United in the Champions League Group stage draw against FC Basel.
The Portuguese boss has plenty of options at centre-back as Victor Lindelof has failed to to make the bench in two of United’s opening three opening matches of the new season since his £39.5m move from Benfica this summer.
Speaking about the selection, Mourinho confirms the squad is in good shape.
“Smalling is in very good condition and Victor is improving every day,” he said.
“Against Basle, Jones and Eric are both suspended so we will play Victor and Smalling and there will be no problem at all.
“The squad is good and the mentality of the players is very good.”
Lindelof is still adapting to his move which is why Mourinho has left him out as Phil Jones and Eric Bailly have both proven they have what it takes to become Mourinho’s favourite defensive pairing.
It’s not a bad position to be in for a manager and he’ll be hoping his players stay fit, especially after the injury crisis at back last season.
