Manchester United have sent scouts to monitor Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic following a series of impressive performances during the early stages of the season.
Jose Mourinho added Nemanja Matic to the ranks over the summer and has a wealth of midfield options to call upon, but the probable departures of Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini – whose contract expires in June 2018 – next summer make signing another midfielder a priority.
Milinkovic-Savic has been a central component to a sensational start to the season from Lazio that has seen them beat Juventus and thrash AC Milan.
And according to Italian media outlet Calcio Mercato , representatives from Man United and Bayern Munich were present for Lazio’s 3-2 win in Genoa last weekend, during which the 22-year-old starred.
Milinkovic-Savic has only recently caught the eye of various big clubs but any Lazio fan will tell you that the Serbian has been an ebullient force in the middle for the last year.
The midfielder boasts an imposing frame, standing at 6ft 3, and revolves his game around a direct, boisterous approach going forward. Comparisons with Matic are unavoidable, but Milinkovoc-Savic places far greater emphasis on breaking through the lines and linking up with the likes of Ciro Immobile further up the pitch.
Mourinho will not be alone in his pursuit of such a physically imposing talent over the summer, that’s for sure.
