Manchester United have sent representatives to watch Roma’s Radja Nainggolan and Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez during the two side’s 0-0 draw in the Champions League, according to reports.
Jose Mourinho had pinpointed Nainggolan, who claimed 14 goals from midfield last season, as a potential midfield option when it appeared as if Man United wouldn’t sign either Eric Dier or Nemanja Matic.
And according to the Daily Star, representatives from the club were present to watch the pair in action as the two sides played out a goalless draw in Rome last week.
United have a diverse plethora of midfield options at their disposal this season, with Paul Pogba, Matic, Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick all offering something different, but that complexion looks set to change very quickly come the end of the season.
Carrick, for one, won’t be at the club for another year, while Fellaini’s contract expires at the end of the campaign. Mourinho wants him to stay and will offer the Belgian a new contract, but he may feel tempted to entertain offers received from Turkey and Italy.
Evolution is key at the highest level, and it seems as if Mourinho already has eyes for the future.
