Video: Anthony Martial speaks English for the first time after Burton Albion win

Anthony Martial has reacted to Manchester United’s 4-1 win over Burton Albion in the League Cup on Wednesday night and gave supporters a rare glimpse of his English skills.

The Frenchman was an effervescent force on the left hand side all evening, burning past defenders at will and dazzling Old Trafford with an exhibition of breathtaking footwork.

He claimed a sumptuous assist for Jesse Lingard before netting Man United’s fourth – and his fourth goal of the season – after 60 minutes.

Speaking after the game, Martial gave his first interview in English and was notably pleased with United’s attacking display.

“We played good tonight,” he beamed, “and I hope that we can take it forward on Saturday as it was a good game against Burton.”

Martial here reminds me of when I had to take those agonising French oral tests back in school – only with millions watching in his case, rather than just a disinterested woman with a recording device wearing some frilly dress, scowling as I poorly tell her about my trip to ‘la plage’ (‘c’etait, um, bon – oui, bon avec mon amis’).

He deserves credit for having a go at what is clearly a language he only uses when absolutely necessary.

Either way, he did his talking on the pitch, and it left Old Trafford speechless. The sheer control, verve, speed and unpredictability of the Frenchman when he has the ball at his feet is a sight to behold. No Burton player had an answer to his mesmerising style.

Supporters will be delighted to see the winger, following a muted second campaign, with the bit between his teeth once again.
