José Mourinho: Attacking left-back Ashley Young adds another dimension to Manchester United

José Mourinho singled out the attacking quality of Ashley Young at left-back as a ‘positive’ in Manchester United’s 1-0 victory against Southampton.

Man United have been able to rely upon Antonio Valencia, who of course started out as a right-winger, to bomb down the right flank from defence.

The left side has been less secure defensively with Matteo Darmian or Daley Blind, and both options have offered little going forward.

Mourinho was delighted with the impact that Young has had on the team since returning from injury in September.

“If you can have two [attacking] full-backs on both sides, not just Valencia on the right, if you can have another one on the left it’s positive for us on many occasions,” Mourinho said.

The left side of the pitch often looked weak and uninventive with Blind or Darmian playing behind one of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, but Young has added something else, another dimension.

Luke Shaw will be the player most United fans will want to see at left-back in future, but Young has impressed.

The 32-year-old bounced back from injury for the under-23s in August and came straight back into the side, first putting in an excellent performance at right-back and now two consecutive demonstrations of his ability on the left.

Shaw will have to remain sidelined for now, but will realise it’s the attacking quality that Mourinho wants to see from his left-back.
