Former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder Claude Makelele believes Mesut Ozil would benefit from swapping Arsenal for Manchester United next summer.
The German has been strongly linked with Man United ever since the German put a new contract at the Emirates on the back-burner over the summer.
Speaking to beIN Sports, the former midfield stalwart encouraged the 29-year-old to join United in the interest of his career at large.
“When you talk about the top players you want them to be in a good team and always putting in a performance the way you want,” he said.
“It would be good for him I think if he were to move. He has been for a long time. I think maybe Jose Mourinho would use him better and would make him a success at Manchester United for sure.”
Looking at Ozil from an objective standpoint, you could sum up his career as one that blew up with a sensational World Cup in 2010 before being followed by a period at Real Madrid hallmarked by superb numbers, before a move to Arsenal that has never felt quite right.
Make no mistake: the German is Arsenal’s best player by some distance, but this notion is hardly recognised or reflected by a lot of his performances. He seems unhappy, out of place, and without doubt in need of something – anything – different.
