The Spaniard enjoyed his finest season yet at Old Trafford last season, making 50 appearances in total, and deservedly claimed the ‘Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year’ award last May.
But he has struggled for minutes under Jose Mourinho this season, making just five Premier League starts, and will be allowed to speak with other clubs over a possible Bosman transfer next summer given his contract expires in June.
And according to Spanish media outlet Diaro Gol, Simeone has pin-pointed Herrera as an ideal midfield option and the 28-year-old, in turn, could be persuaded to work with the Atletico boss next season.
Herrera was approached by Barcelona over the summer but made it clear from the start that he was going nowhere. The only way appeared to be up following what was a truly superb season under Mourinho.
But the complexion of United’s midfield has dramatically changed since then. Nemanja Matic’s arrival, along with Marouane Fellaini‘s increased role, has rendered Herrera’s role in the middle somewhat ambiguous, or at least far less obvious than last season – a notion personified by his performances of late.
And with no signs of contract talks progressing, along with Mourinho’s determination to further add to his midfield options next summer, Herrera may indeed feel like a return to Spain would be the best thing for his career.
