Manchester United struggled to get going in the first half against Newcastle and had to rely on Paul Pogba’s brilliance to get the ball rolling.
In the second period, however, they found their groove in emphatic fashion after Jose Mourinho switched to a 4-4-2 set-up at half time.
Romeu Lukaku got himself on the scoresheet for the first time since September and Marcus Rashford linked up brilliantly with the Belgian to provide an assist for Pogba. The natural fusion between the two was there for all to see.
And with that in mind, here is a potential XI for the visit to FC Basel on Wednesday night with the aforementioned pair starting up front.
Both Lukaku and Rashford have spoken effusively about the natural bond they have on the pitch and it came to life once again over the weekend, with the latter bursting through the middle to meet a perfectly placed cross from his teammate to cushion a header in Pogba’s direction.
The simplicity of the move was what made it beautiful: both players tore forward and found some space before finding each other perfectly, producing an assault on Newcastle’s goal that dripped with instinct rather than calculation.
And with Basel set to throw the kitchen sink at Mourinho’s men on Wednesday, the pair could receive plenty of space to inflict further damage after both scoring against the Swiss champions in September.
