Antoine Griezmann’s agent Eric Olhats has claimed that the Frenchman’s time at Atletico Madrid is coming to an end amid rumours a move to Manchester United.
Jose Mourinho came close to securing Griezmann’s signature back in June but he ultimately decided to remain loyal to Diego Simeone after Atletico saw their transfer ban upheld.
But he has notably struggled at Atletico this season, with rumours of a move away refusing to abate, and was even jeered by his own supporters during the stalemate with Real Madrid last weekend.
And Olhats, speaking to L’Equipe, noted that it really does feel like the end for Griezmann at Atletico.
“It’s a complicated situation for him but it feels like the end,” he said.
“I know him very well and we are still close, but to see him play at the level he has for much of this season means something is not right.
“Ok, he can change his mind of course and in football nothing is certain, but this feels like the end of his chapter with Atleti.
“The whistles (from Atletico fans during the derby) will have hurt him, I have no doubt, even if he says otherwise.”
The sound of those jeers and whistles from all corners of the Wanda Metropilano were piercing – far more powerful and telling than any report you find on the internet.
Even his superb overhead kick against Roma during the week won’t reverse the tide of negative opinion and feeling towards him from the Atletico faithful. This is a fanbase that has always measured a player’s worth in terms of their dedication to the cause rather than goals, after all, and they can tell that something isn’t quite right.
Griezmann said over the summer that he was an Atletico player “now more than ever”, but the pendulum has now swung the other way in emphatic fashion.
