Sergio Romero 6.5 – Couldn’t do a thing about a CSKA Moscow goal that just shouldn’t have stood. Called into action late on when Alan Dzagoev broke free and got down brilliantly to keep Manchester United ahead.
Antonio Valencia 6 – Brought plenty of impetus down the right hand side in the first half and defended diligently, only to fade slightly as the game went on.
Victor Lindelof 6.5 – Another accomplished display on the ball from the Swede, who is fast asserting himself as a first choice option under Jose Mourinho.
Chris Smalling 6 – Foolishly played the visitors onside in the build-up to their controversial goal just before half time but provided an important physical presence.
Daley Blind 6.5 – Composed himself nicely on the left hand side of a back three, linking up well with Shaw.
Luke Shaw 7.5 – You wouldn’t think that this was his first start since April: bombed forward with ferocious intent. produced dangerous crosses, and made a series of decisive interventions. An emphatic message to Mourinho and anybody who doubted he had a future at Old Trafford.
Ander Herrera 6.5 – Did the dirty work in midfield with tenacity and cold execution, ensuring United dominated proceedings on the whole. Will need to do the same on Sunday.
Paul Pogba 7.5 – An ebullient, masterful display in the middle, despite the bombshell of missing the derby hanging over him. Dominated the centre and provided a sumptuous assist for Lukaku.
Juan Mata 7 – The sight of Mata caressing the ball and moving play gracefully through the lines will never get old. A silky display from start to finish – crowned by a smart assist for Rashford.
Marcus Rashford 7.5 – Made life hell for CSKA’s defence – especially Vasili Berezutski, who looked like he needed a wheelchair by the end – from the very start, bursting in behind with reckless abandon and eventually claiming a much needed winning goal with 25 minutes left.
Romeu Lukaku 7 – Yet another complete striker’s performance from the Belgian, this time crowned with a smart finish to pull the hosts level. Continually stretched CSKA’s defence and always threatened with the ball at his feet.
