Jose Mourinho interested in buying Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil in January: report

Manchester United’s manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly interested in beating off competition for Mesut Ozil even if it means spending money to sign him early.

Ozil is yet to sign a contract extension with current club Arsenal, meaning foreign teams can approach him from January.

English clubs meanwhile will have to wait a little while longer, giving foreign interest in the German a bit of an advantage.

Mourinho though is apparently keen to get ahead by bidding for the player rather than waiting for his contract to run out in the summer of 2018.

Mesut hasn’t confirmed his loyalty for the London club or made clear his intentions to leave, instead claiming either possibility is just as likely as the other.

According to Don Balon though, Jose is trying to force a decision out of the former Real Madrid man by willing to spend £22m on the player.

Arsenal are seemingly reluctant to sell the player even in January and are willing to hold out on him for as long as possible, even if it means losing him for free.

£22m would be a little less than half the fee the Gunners paid for Mesut Ozil when initially bringing him over from the Spanish capital.

Jose Mourinho is hoping that the pair’s previous fruitful working relationship in Madrid would also give him an advantage in signing him.

United’s current attacking midfielders consist of Juan Mata, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and academy product Jesse Lingard.

There have been rumours that Mata will be moved on at the earliest opportunity and that the manager is fed up with Mkhitaryan’s inconsistency, making space for the possible arrival of the German maestro.
