Manchester United have offered Juan Mata to Inter Milan in hope of mastering a part-exchange deal for Portuguese midfielder Joao Mario.
Mata has had a surprisingly large influence on Man United since Jose Mourinho’s arrival in July 2016, despite many predicting a swift end to his Old Trafford career. Recently, though, his game time and importance have decreased.
Mourinho is looking at making a move for Inter Milan’s Jaoa Mario, a Portuguese international who was vital for his country in their triumphant Euro 2016 campaign, according to Corriere dello Sport.
Mata is hoping to get more game time ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup next summer in Russia, needing it to secure his place in Spain’s squad for what, you would think, would be his last opportunity at a World Cup given his age of 29.
United would also be expected to pay a large transfer fee. Mario joined Inter for €40m from Sporting Clube de Portugal just two summers ago. His value has only increased, and so a deal would include both Mata and a transfer fee.
In 11 Serie A appearances so far this season, Mario has five assists. He’s one of many midfielders recently linked to United.
Schalke 04’s Leon Goretzka has been heavily linked alongside Valencia CF 20-year-old Carlos Soler. Both are younger than Mario. Soler may be cheaper, too, despite a huge release clause in his contract at the Mestalla, due to the Spanish side’s financial issues.
