Manchester United are behind Chelsea in the race to sign Juventus’ Alex Sandro in the January transfer window, according to the Sun.
The Premier League champions tried to bring Sandro to Stamford Bridge last summer, but are going in again for the full-back.
Man United have joined the chase for the Brazilian with Jose Mourinho looking to strengthen the left-back position in his side. Ashley Young is the current regular in that position, with Luke Shaw, Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian all behind him.
Sandro’s form has dipped this season. Juventus asked Chelsea for £80m last summer, but the Blues will offer less than that for a January move. United, though, will have to a pay a hefty sum to sign a quality new left-back midway through the season.
Mourinho could hold off after giving Luke Shaw his first start in 219 days in the UEFA Champions League 2-1 victory against CSKA Moscow.
The Portuguese admitted that Shaw had been impressive on his comeback, and that could force Mourinho into waiting until summer to sign a new first-choice left-back.
Shaw’s talent isn’t in question. His performances, consistency and attitude are, though. Against CSKA, he was raring to go, played the full 90 minutes and looked like one of the best players on the pitch.
United have to give him a chance. They could save themselves the best part of £100m by doing so.
