Jose Mourinho insists Manchester United can still win the Premier League title, despite 11 point gap to Man City

Jose Mourinho has insisted the title race is far from over for Manchester United after his side beat AFC Bournemouth 1-0 in the Premier League on Wednesday evening.

Rivals Manchester City appear to be running away with it, beating Swansea City 4-0 on Wednesday to maintain their unbeaten record this season and stretch their winning run to a record-breaking 15 games.

The gap between Man United and City is now 11 points after Sunday evening’s 2-1 loss at Old Trafford for Mourinho’s men.

Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal of the game against Bournemouth for an essential three points.

“I am pleased with the three points,” Mourinho said. “It was a difficult match.

“They had one more day’s rest than us, they were fresher than us, and mentally fresher because a big match takes more from our players.

“We had chances, [Anthony] Martial missed a good chance, [Marcus] Rashford could have had an astonishing effort, and in the last 15 [minutes] they pushed us.”

Explaining his thoughts on the title race, Mourinho continued: “I said we play match after match and the next we have to try to win, we try match after match. It is only over in May, if it is over now I go on holiday to Brazil or Los Angeles.”

It’s the attitude that United’s players and coaching staff must have. They cannot afford to give up at this stage. 11 points is a huge gap, but it is possible to close it. It seems so unlikely because of the stunningly good form that City are currently in, but a couple of slip-ups and suddenly the title race is back on.

United must continue winning games, though. They simply cannot afford to slip up again this season.
