Manchester United are ahead of Manchester City in the race to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl, according to reports.
And Man United have expressed keen interest in securing the 22-year-old, who has attracted attention from various European suitors, including Man City, following a series of impressive displays this season after recovering from an ankle injury in September.
According to the Independent, United are ahead of Pep Guardiola’s side in the pursuit of his signature, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan – a player Dortmund are willing to take back in January – set to serve as an important bargaining chip in negotiations.
And one area in need of addressing, yet again, is the midfield: only Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic have been reliable on a regular basis this season and Mourinho is right to be looking for more dynamic options in that area ahead of next season.
Weigl is just one of the names being thrown around, with Lorenzo Pellegrini, Jorginho, Leander Dendoncker, Fabinho and Sergej Milinković-Savić all emerging as potential options as well.
