Former Manchester United forward Andy Cole has urged Jose Mourinho to go all out to sign Alexis Sanchez over the January transfer window.
The Chile international appeared to be on the verge of joining Manchester City but Man United have swooped in with an improved offer of £25m, according to reports.
Arsene Wenger has since noted that nothing has been decided regarding Sanchez but Gianluca di Marzio claimed on Friday that United were leading the race to secure his signature after Pep Guardiola refused to improve his offer of £20m.
And Cole believes that Mourinho needs to take advantage of this window of opportunity to sign Sanchez this month.
“If Manchester United bought Sanchez it would be a major-major signing,” he said.
“We all know what he did at Arsenal, Barcelona and before that Udinese. We appreciate what a good player he is. He’ll have the choice of a lot of clubs and, if United could get him, it would be a massive signing.”
Man City were willing to pay £60m for a Sanchez back in the summer when he had less than a year left on his contract, which makes their reluctance to make a £30m bid – the amount Arsenal want – when he has six months left makes very little sense indeed.
Perhaps there is no need to. Maybe the deal is already set to go through and talk of United’s interest is in fact just talk after all.
But if there is any chance of a lucrative offer for Sanchez and Arsenal having the weight to push a deal through, United’s board cannot hesitate for a second.
