Martial scored with Man United’s first shot on target as they beat Burnley to temporarily narrow the gap to local title rivals Manchester City to nine points before the Blues faced Newcastle United.
The youngster has now scored in his last three consecutive Premier League fixtures, the first time he’s achieved that feat since joining United from AS Monaco for around £36m as a teenager in 2015.
Asked about the goal, which was set up by Romelu Lukaku with some wonderful hold-up play, squeezing between two Burnley players with great strength before spotting the run of Martial and finding him perfectly.
“Both were very good today,” Jones told MUTV. “Martial needs one chance and he scores. And that’s why he ’s so crucial for us at the moment. He doesn’t need a second chance and the finish was terrific.”
It was United’s fifth consecutive cleansheet, too. Jones has been at the heart of that and was many United fans’ pick for Man of the Match on Saturday, even though it was Martial who was chosen by supporters on Twitter.
“We want to try and keep as many cleansheets as possible,” the England international said. “It gives us the best chance to go and win the game, we’re doing that at the moment, we’re picking up points, who knows where we’ll get to.”
United will need to keep the cleansheets and victories up if they are to have any chance of catching Man City, who are well ahead and look certain to lift the title come May.
However, Jones says his experience as a United player shows why the Reds can still finish as champions this season.
“Stranger things have happened. You never know. I remember in my first season at United, we were 12 points clear [when City won the league on goal difference]. It is not going to be easy, but you never say never.”
