The European Champions looked to have finally abandoned their pursuit of the Spaniard and directed their attention towards Athletic Bilbao keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
But the latter’s decision to pen a new contract with Bilbao has made it likely that Madrid will refocus their attention on De Gea ahead of the summer transfer window.
And according to the Sun‘s Daniel Cutts, De Gea has been made aware of Alexis Sanchez’s lucrative wage packet and will use Madrid’s interest as leverage in order to secure a wage bump with Man United.
This is a nice reverse of what usually happens with Madrid and United: Sergio Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane have all used supposed interest from Old Trafford for their own personal benefit at the Bernabeu in recent years, and De Gea, whose contract expires in 2019, would be wise to do the same.
And while giving money to men who already have copious amounts is not something I’d advocate, De Gea, in the context of the football business, will know his worth. He has progressed considerably since 2015 and will, you sense, want to see that reflected in his wages.
