Ashley Young: Manchester United can win the Champions League this season

Ashley Young has insisted that Manchester United have what it takes to win the Champions League this season.

Jose Mourinho’s men travel to Seville on Tuesday ahead of their first ever competitive meeting with Sevilla for a place in the quarter-finals.

Man United have reached the last eight just once since 2011, when they went all the way to the final before being outplayed by Barcelona at Wembley.

And when asked whether Man United can go all the way this time around, Young replied: “Of course.”

“You don’t enter a competition not to win it. That’s what we will be looking to do and take each game as it comes. The next one is against Sevilla.

“That’s a tough away game like today, like Newcastle away. That’s what the stadium is like. We just have to concentrate on ourselves.”

United simply don’t have the necessary mettle and calibre in their squad to compete with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich, but that hasn’t stopped Mourinho before.

He won the trophy with Porto in 2004, defying logic along with expectations, before doing it again in 2010 by beating one of the best ever club sides in Barcelona under Pep Guardiola on route to the final in Madrid.

Whether Mourinho still has the power to motivate his players in the same way is a matter open to debate, but every team still in the competition will know that this is the stage where he truly thrives – the time when Mourinho turns more Mourinho than ever, ruthlessly and succinctly putting in plans to pick off an opponent over 180 minutes.

They are miles behind others still in the competition, yet one would be stupid to rule them out completely.
