From Spain: Barcelona monitoring Daley Blind ahead of summer transfer window

Barcelona are keeping a close eye on the situation of Daley Blind ahead of a potential move in the summer, according to reports from Spain.

The Catalan side are on the lookout for reinforcements at the back following Javier Mascherano’s departure in January and amid doubt over the future of Samuel Umtiti.

Blind, whose contract expires in the summer, has not made a Premier League start since August and injury has prevented him from featuring since early January.

And according to Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo, the Dutchman is among an array of centre back options being monitored by the La Liga side.

There could be a considerable exodus from Old Trafford in the summer as Jose Mourinho, backed all the way by Ed Woodward, continues to overhaul the squad.

And while the futures of players such as Chris Smalling, Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Phil Jones are up in the air, Blind slots into a different category of players – including Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini and Matteo Darmian – who are essentially out of the door already.

He has rarely performed poorly in a United shirt but that defensive horror show in Basel back in November highlighted the club’s desperate need to reform the full-back area in the summer. And with Blind’s contract expiring in a matter of months, you can be sure he will be ushered out to make way for fresher faces.
