Eric Cantona has hailed Jose Mourinho’s management style, despite frequent criticism from all sides of the Portuguese’s defence football at Manchester United.
Some of Mourinho’s tactical decisions and line-ups have been critiqued for failing to match with the Man United “way”.
Mourinho, of course, does not care. He is a manager who plays the odds, and if that means playing defensively, that is what he will do.
So far, it’s seen him lift two major trophies and a Community Shield at Old Trafford. Cantona outlined his admiration for the 55-year-old.
“I love Mourinho,” Cantona claimed to SFR.
“He has proven himself capable of winning major competitions and titles for over ten years.
“Mourinho will continue to win games because he’s a strategist.”
Cantona admitted that Mourinho’s style is not typical of United nor is it attacking in any way. However, that doesn’t prevent it from being praised.
“His style is more defensive, but he does it beautifully,” the former-United talisman added.
Quite what the United way is, given most people simply refer back to Sir Alex Ferguson’s style of play, is a mystery. Though Ferguson led the Reds for almost three decades, and did so better than any manager in the history of the game, United’s history did not start in 1986.
United have played different styles of football, and Mourinho is an improvement on Louis van Gaal and David Moyes, both in terms of performances and results, as well as stature and attracting players.
It could be better, of course, but it’s acceptable, and most United fans agree with that cautious optimism.
