Ruud van Nistelrooy: Cristiano Ronaldo always knew he wanted to be the best in the world

Former Manchester United man Ruud van Nistelrooy has claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo always knew he wanted to be the best in the world.

The Real Madrid man has long been missed since departing Old Trafford and it’s fair to say he hasn’t been truly replaced since.

United let him fulfil his lifelong dream of moving to Spain for a then world record fee knowing fully well what type of talent he was.

Ronaldo was always expected to be a world class talent and it’s certainly become true with him winning numerous personal and team accolades.

Van Nistelrooy has had a trouble past with the Portuguese man but the pair have since buried the hatchet and the former has claimed the latter always knew he was going to be the best.

According to Goal, Ruud said: “He came as a young lad but he knew what he wanted to become, and he also said it: ‘I want to be the best player in the world’.

“At the beginning you think: ‘OK, he’s a young lad – keep dreaming’. But the work-rate and talent he’s combining has made him achieve his goals, and he’s still going strong. It’s fantastic.”

Cristiano was embarrassingly written off at the beginning of the season by many people who believed he was now declining.

However, it quickly became apparent that the former Red Devil didn’t lose his touch as he looks set to break the 40 goal barrier once more this season.

With Cristiano Ronaldo now being in the latter years of his career, he’s had to readjust his role and adapt to his surroundings in order to compete.

No longer seen taking on players for pace or dribbling past them as he used to at Manchester United, the versatile attacker has adjusted his game to becoming a lethal goalscorer.

Ronaldo now reserves his energy during games, preferring to save it for when he needs to be decisive and as the world saw, he did so perfectly against Juventus in the Champions League.
