Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic will consider joining Manchester United in the summer, according to reports from Spain.
Jose Mourinho has emphasised a need for midfield reinforcements over the transfer window and has reportedly outlined Jean Michael Seri, Jorginho and Fred as targets.
Reports from Spain earlier this season claimed that Mourinho had identified Rakitic as the missing piece to his midfield jigsaw for next season.
And according to Spanish media outlet Diaro Gol, Rakitic is tempted by the prospect of moving to Old Trafford but will not make any decision until he gauges from Ernesto Valverde and Barcelona chiefs what kind of role he will have in the first team next season.
Moving for Rakitic would go some way to satisfying the demands of supporters for greater attacking impetus from deep along with Paul Pogba. The Croat is a skilled manipulator of the ball, smart and working the ball through the lines, positionally astute.
Where he tends to fall short, however, is where United have often fallen short this term: playing against a solid low block and dealing with physically aggressive lesser sides with a nothing-to-lose mentality.
In other words, he would be good signing – but not if he’s the only midfielder United bring in over the summer.
