Jose Mourinho: Manchester United must show consistency at every level

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has warned his players that they must become consistent if they wish to win the Premier League title.

The Portuguese boss and his players faltered against West Brom on Sunday to hand the crown to fierce rivals Manchester City but he was discussing the future.

Mourinho was clearly furious with his players’ mentalities against their opponents but pointed to it as a wider problem.

United have certainly not been poor this season and how shown bouts of serious quality but have been unable to produce it regularly.

At the start of the campaign they kept up with City’s own great start but the inconsistencies soon crept in and they fell far behind the title race.

According to Sky Sports, Jose said: “I trust in my work, that’s for sure. I have no reason not to trust – eight titles are eight titles and three Premier Leagues are three Premier Leagues.

“The last Premier League was not 20 years ago, it was three years ago. I know how to win. I believe in myself, but I don’t play. With my experience you don’t win titles with inconsistency.

“You win titles with quality of course, without that you have no chance, but you win titles with consistency.

“Consistency at every level, not just the performance level, but the mental, the day by day, everything must be consistent until the last day. So one of the things we must improve is consistency.”

There were reports that Jose Mourinho was unhappy with Anthony Martial‘s levels in training but the likelihood he feels the same about the rest of his team.

The former Real Madrid manager certainly suggested it as he claimed he could feel the players’ poor mentality all week ahead of the loss to the Baggies.

United fans themselves have also noticed that some of those involved in the squad are serious dead wood and will need to be moved on as soon as possible for the good of the team.

It’s been said that Mourinho is planning a summer overhaul but one that would only focus on his defence and rightfully so.

The Red Devils defence needs serious work with the majority of them having been at Old Trafford since Sir Alex Ferguson’s time.
