Manchester United will face competition from Paris Saint Germain for the signature of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred this summer, according to reports.

Shakhtar chief executive Sergei Palkin confirmed earlier this year that Fred, linked with Manchester City as well, would join one of the Manchester clubs at the end of the season.
And according to M.E.N‘s Samuel Luckhurst, United also face competition for Fred, whose release clause stands at €60m (£52.89m), from PSG ahead of Thiago Motta’s departure from the club.
The French champions, having relied too heavily on Adrien Rabiot at the base of midfield this season, are likely to serve as United’s strongest competitor for Fred after City more recently diverted their attention towards signing Jorginho. Jean-Michel Seri is also considered a more suitable option by Pep Guardiola.
United will never be able to replace Carrick, but in Fred they would add – on top of someone capable of sharing the load with Nemanja Matic – a vitally different dimension to their midfield: a player with some technical guile, capable of tracking back and doing the dirty work alongside elegantly moving the ball through the lines.
