Manchester United are set to compete the transfer of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred by the start of next month, according to reports.
Jose Mourinho is on the lookout to secure a replacement for Michael Carrick and has intensified his pursuit of Fred, whose release clause stands at €60m, in the last few weeks.
Man United have had a free run at the 25-year-old ever since Manchester City pulled out of signing him in January, placing their emphasis on signing Aymeric Laporte instead. Napoli’s Jorginho has emerged as a preferable midfield option for Pep Guardiola in the meantime.
And according to M.E.N‘s Samuel Luckhurst, Fred is travelling with the Brazil squad to the north-west next week, taking on Croatia at Anfield in a friendly, and United expect to complete the signing during his time on the country before embarking on Russia.
Shakhtar’s chief executive Sergei Palkin remarked earlier in the campaign that Fred and his agent had targeted a move to Manchester over the prospect of joining Paris Saint Germain.
The Brazilian himself has spoken of wanting to take the next step in his career, to take on a big challenge. There aren’t many bigger for a holding midfielder than stepping into the shoes of Carrick.
