Manchester United could complete the signing of Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld “sooner rather than later”, according to Sam Pilger, the former editor of the official club magazine.
Alderweireld has emerged as an obvious option after being told he can leave Tottenham Hotspur amid a contract dispute with the club.
And according to Pilger, Man United are edging closer to signing Alderweireld and could secure his services before the World Cup.
There is a hope among the Spurs hierarchy that they can engineer a move to Alderweireld’s former club Ajax in exchange for promising youngster Matthijs de Ligt, but the Dutch side are unlikely to let go of such a talented player and indeed lose yet another top defender to the same club for a successive summer.
Spurs are, as Sir Alex Ferguson has noted, an absolute nightmare to negotiate with. But in this case there is a determination to move on Alderweireld, whose relationship with Mauricio Pochettino has gone cold. Mourinho will no doubt be determined to capitalise.
