Manchester United want to announce the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk defensive midfielder Fred next week, according to reports.
Jose Mourinho made Fred his first-choice replacement for the retired Michael Carrick and wants the transfer completed before the player flies off to the World Cup in Russia later this month.
The 25-year-old is currently training at Tottenham Hotspur’s Spurs Lodge base in Enfield, which is 15 minutes away from Man United’s London office in Mayfair, ahead of Brazil vs Croatia at Anfield on Sunday.
The Manchester Evening News report that United could confirm that ‘Fred is red’ no later than Monday, with a source close to the player stating that it’s likelier to be after Sunday’s international friendly.
United believe that “most of the loose ends are tied up” after Gilberto Silva flew over to England and escalated negotiations earlier on in the transfer window and are hoping to seal a deal for less than his €60m (£52.5m) release clause.
Manchester City were thought to be in pole position to sign Fred in January, but lost interest and are now set to sign Napoli’s Jorginho, leaving a clear path for United to swoop.
He has made over 100 appearances for Ukranian champions Shakhtar since leaving his home country in 2013 and is described as “a very dynamic, busy little left-footed midfielder who’s got some quality.”
