Manchester United are reportedly ready to launch a £50m bid for Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Toby Alderweireld and could move for him as early as this week.
The 29-year-old is stalling on a new contract at Spurs due to wage concerns and believes his current £50k-a-week salary should be at least doubled to match top earner Harry Kane.
Because of this, Mauricio Pochettino is set to lose his prize defensive asset this summer and Jose Mourinho is a known admirer… and happens to be looking for a new centre-back ahead of the 2018-19 season.
According to The Sun, Man United are ready to put £50m on the table for Alderweireld and offer the player a huge increase in wage to lure him away from North London.
Mourinho sees Alderweireld as one of the world’s best in his position and club officials know that there’s a bargain to be had for such an unbelievable talent.
However, if Spurs do give in and up Alderweireld’s wages, resulting in the defender staying, United will not return for his services and move for other targets in the same area.
24-year-old Eric Bailly is considering to be the best centre-back currently at Old Trafford and hasn’t really had a set partner since his arrival in 2016.
Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof were used the most throughout the 2017-18 campaign whilst Bailly spent a long time injured on the sidelines, but neither player really fits the bill yet, although there’s a lot of time for the latter to improve.
Bailly is needing a long-term partner, or at least a cemented partner for the next 3-5 years, and Alderweireld could be just that.
